Tour of Britain’s first-ever Dorset stage

West Bay and Ferndown are to host the first-ever Dorset stage at this year's Tour of Britain on Saturday 10 September 2022.

Stage seven of the UK’s most prestigious cycle race stretches from west to east across the county, taking the riders from West Bay, known for its striking golden cliffs, to the bustling town of Ferndown via a 180-kilometre (112-mile) route.

Dorset’s natural beauty, including the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be showcased to the world on the penultimate day of this year’s Tour of Britain.

There will be plenty of opportunities to view the race and riders as the course travels through many of Dorset's towns and villages. So if you can't travel to the start or finish, don't worry, as the race will be coming to a location near you.

After leaving West Bay the course will initially run parallel with the West Dorset Heritage Coast before passing through the pretty villages of Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury. Skirting around the top of Weymouth, the route heads north towards Dorset's county town of Dorchester. Continuing eastwards, the riders will then pass through West Lulworth and on through the Isle of Purbeck towards the beautiful ruins of Corfe Castle. Now heading north, the riders will journey through the Saxon walled town of Wareham, before continuing inland via Bere Regis and Milton Abbas. The route then loops around towards the Georgian town of Blandford Forum, continuing east to Wimborne Minster. Then heading north for the final loop around through Verwood and down into Ferndown's Victoria Road to the finish line.

The noted climbs of Whiteway Hill near East Lulworth, Bulbarrow Hill and Okeford Hill all feature along the route.

The race’s first-ever Dorset stage promises to be an unforgettable sporting spectacle, starring over 100 of the world’s best riders and some of the best backdrops that Britain has to offer. You can download a map of the Stage 7 route from the Tour of Britain website.
