You are here: Things To Do > The Rex Cinema
The Rex is Dorset's oldest running cinema and one of the oldest in the whole country. Recently refurbished maintaining the ambiance of the 1920 Art Deco interior, the auditorium seats 125 with space for one wheel chair at the front and, thanks to donations from our loyal customers and Viridor Credits, also operates some of the latest technology in cinema projection and sound system.
We have our own Bar where you can buy drinks to take up to the auditorium to enjoy whilst you watch the film. Don't miss the famous claymation adverts before the film, made by our very own Head Projectionist Dougal Dixon! Delicious local ice creams sold before the film.
Run mostly by volunteers, we have a full programme of recently released British and international films alongside regular live streamings of National Theatre Live perfomances. Other events include monthly dementia friendly screenings of classic films ('Golden Moments'); popular after school special screenings for children and families (including complimentary squash and biscuits and fun free raffle prizes for children); regular 'Silver Screen' matinées of the most popular films from the previous month (including complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits); and special events hosting guests from the film industry.
Family Film Matinées during all school holidays. Please check website for latest news.
Stairlift to auditorium and allocated space for one wheelchair in auditorium.
Also a venue for The Purbeck Film Festival (www.purbeckfilm.com).
