*LATEST UPDATE* We’ve taken the decision to temporarily close over the winter months. We’re going to spend the time on some important maintenance as well as husbanding our resources - ready to bounce back with a new programme of workshops, courses and community projects from Easter 2021. You can still contact us by email or phone, but it might take a little longer to get back to you - and it would help to include a telephone number with any email enquiry.
Burngate Stone Carving Centre on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset provides traditional stone carving courses for everyone from age 6 upwards and all abilities. Learn how to use the tools involved in stone carving and enjoy making memories with family and friends at our unique stone carving centre. A therapeutic yet creative experience which will make you feel the essence of the Purbeck quarrying history. The Centre also offers a wide range of art and rural craft courses and children's and family activities throughout the year, whatever the weather. Visit the Centre's exhibition of sculpture and craftwork or peruse the gift shop through which we support around 40 local artists and crafts people who produce lovely items for sale such as hand knitted headgear, hosiery, jewellery, candles, cushions, cards and the work of emerging local artists. Alternatively, just drop in us for a cup of tea and homemade Dorset apple cake and a wander around the centre. Open Monday - Friday 0900hrs to 1300hrs.
A truly beautiful location, look out east over Swanage Bay towards the Isle of Wight, look north over Nine Barrow and Ballard Downs. The surrounding landscape – fields, old quarry workings, and cliff tops above the English Channel – are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The area is part of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World heritage Site, that reaches from Exmouth, Devon to nearby Swanage. Burngate is dedicated to the preservation of the ancient art of stone carving by educating and informing our visitors. All welcome and dog friendly too! As seen on BBC1 Escape to the Country and a Dorset Tourism Award winner.

We are on the B3069 Kingston Road between Kingston and Langton Matravers - it's the ridge road that runs parallel to the main Corfe Castle to Swanage road, with fabulous views back down towards the castle and out towards the cliffs.
From Corfe: take the righthand turning just at the end of the village. Climb up the corkscrew hill to Kingston then keep going - the road bends left past the Scott Arms pub. Carry on this road until it starts to dip back down towards the sea - you often get a marvellous view of Swanage Bay looking out to the Isle of Wight. We are on the left just as the road drops over the brow of the hill - opposite the second turning to Worth Matravers. There is a small layby opposite our gate.
From Swanage: leave Swanage headed back towards Corfe then take the left hand turning at the edge of the town. Drive up the hil and through Langton Matravers then keep going. You will see turnings to Acton and Worth Matravers on your left - we are on the right, just past the Worth Matravers turning. There is a small layby opposite our entrance.
Look out for our signs!
FROM THE WEST: The nearest mainline train station is Wareham (on the London Waterloo to Weymouth line). Switch onto the Wilts and Dorset number 40 bus to Langton Matravers - get off at the Acton bus stop.
FROM THE EAST: The nearest mainline train station is Bournemouth. Switch onto the Wilts and Dorset number 50 bus to Swanage, then the number 40 bus to Langton Matravers - get off at the Acton bus stop.
