Autumn is the perfect time to explore Dorset’s National Trust places, with golden woodlands, crisp coastal air, and plenty of seasonal fun for all ages. Here are five brilliant ways to get outdoors and make the most of this magical time of year - all included with standard admission (and free for National Trust members).
1. See Autumn blaze and a masterpiece at Kingston Lacy
Autumn is bright, bold and beautiful at Kingston Lacy near Wimborne, as the Acer Glade and Japanese Garden dazzle with fiery reds, yellows and oranges.
Don’t miss Rembrandt van Rijn’s Self-portrait in a Feathered Bonnet (1635) - one of the National Trust’s greatest treasures - on display in the house at Kingston Lacy for the first time, launching its national tour.
2. Step into history and mystery at Corfe Castle
With 1,000 years of stories and sweeping views, Corfe Castle is especially atmospheric in autumn. Join ghost detective trails, daring teddy zip wires, and gory storytelling events. It’s a place where history and imagination collide.

3. Spot red squirrels and folklore on Brownsea Island
Catch the last chance to visit Brownsea before it closes for the season.

Autumn is prime time for red squirrel sightings, and the Mystical Woodland Quest Trail adds a magical twist to your adventure. Guided walks and seasonal treats make it a must-visit.
4. Explore coastal trails at Studland Bay
Breathe in the fresh sea air and follow the Wicked Wildlife Trail at Studland Bay, where clues from nocturnal creatures lead brave explorers through dunes and heathland.

Shell Bay’s quieter beaches are perfect for sandcastle building and spotting migrating birds.

5. Celebrate Hardy’s legacy at his cottage
Nestled in the woods, Hardy’s Cottage offers a cosy escape into literary history. Enjoy apple pressing, storytelling, and Victorian recipes before it closes for the season. It’s a hands-on way to connect with Dorset’s cultural roots.
