Summer is here, and with it comes the return of the National Trust’s much-loved Summer of Play, sponsored by Starling Bank. Running throughout the school holidays, this family-friendly celebration brings a festival atmosphere to some of Dorset’s most beautiful and historic places.
From castle ruins to island trails, here are 10 brilliant ways to get outdoors and play in Dorset this summer—all included with standard admission (and free for National Trust members).
1. Get Creative in Kingston Lacy’s Kitchen Garden
Every day is different at Kingston Lacy, where the Kitchen Garden transforms into a vibrant hub of creativity and fun. Families can enjoy a rotating programme of crafts, storytelling, circus skills, and bubble magic. Look out for performances by Jamie Jigsaw, who brings laughter and wonder with his magic tricks, and Squidge and Pop, who fill the garden with bubbles and joy.
2. Play Through the Ruins at Corfe Castle
Step into a world of medieval adventure at Corfe Castle, where the ruins become a playground for the imagination. Try your aim in the archery zone, or test your skills with mini slingshots, launching beanbags at colourful targets nestled among the ancient stone walls. Design your own castle in the family quest, climb the tower like Medieval royalty and at weekends join fun and interactive storytelling tours with the Keeper of the Castle.

3. Follow the Crayon Rubbing Trail on Brownsea Island
Hop on a boat to Brownsea Island and embark on a crayon rubbing trail filled with fun activities and surprises. It’s a great way to explore the island’s natural beauty while keeping little ones engaged and entertained.
4. Build Big with Giant Blocks at Kingston Lacy
Let imaginations run wild with giant building blocks—a standout feature of Kingston Lacy’s Summer of Play. Children can construct castles, ball runs, or anything they dream up, encouraging creativity, teamwork, and hands-on fun in a beautiful outdoor setting.
5. Play by the Sea at Shell Bay, Studland
Every Monday during the summer holidays, Shell Bay becomes a beachside games zone. Families can enjoy giant snakes and ladders, volleyball, badminton, and sensory play, all set against the stunning backdrop of Studland Bay.
6. Tackle the Obstacle Zone at Corfe Castle
For those who love a challenge, the obstacle zone at Corfe Castle offers stepping stones, balance beams, and more. It’s a great way for kids to test their agility and coordination while exploring one of Dorset’s most iconic landmarks.
7. Leap Like a Deer on Brownsea Island
Get moving at Brownsea Island with playful challenges that encourage kids to leap like a deer, play like a chicken, and even try bunny yoga. These imaginative games are designed to connect children with nature through movement and laughter.
8. Join the Wacky Races at Kingston Lacy
Get ready for giggles and friendly competition in the wacky races at Kingston Lacy. Whether it’s racing in a wheelbarrow, rickshaw, or on a bouncy strawberry, this playful activity is a firm favourite with families and a great way to burn off some energy.

9. Relax with Garden Games at Corfe Castle
Prefer something a little calmer? The garden games area at Corfe Castle provides a peaceful space to enjoy classic outdoor games, perfect for winding down after a busy day of exploring.
10. Climb and Scamper Like a Red Squirrel on Brownsea Island
Finish your Brownsea Island adventure at the natural play area, where children can climb, leap, and scamper just like the island’s famous red squirrels. It’s a perfect spot for free play and exploration.
