Summer sees Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve burst into life with a dazzling display of wildflowers. As the gateway to the Kingcombe National Nature Reserve (KNNR), this idyllic landscape invites visitors to step back in time. Managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust as a traditional working farm, the nature reserve features a patchwork of flower-rich fields bordered by thick hedgerows, winding streams, ancient green lanes, and wooded slopes rising along the River Hooke valley.

Discover diverse wildlife

This rich mosaic of habitats supports an incredible diversity of wildlife—from yellowhammers and bee orchids to waxcap fungi and meadow brown butterflies. In recognition of its exceptional ecological value, Kingcombe Meadows and neighbouring Powerstock Common were jointly designated a National Nature Reserve in 2021, marking them as landscapes of both national and international importance.

Wildflowers in bloom in Dorset

What sets Kingcombe apart is its resistance to modern agricultural practices. Free from pesticides and artificial fertilisers, its unimproved grasslands are a haven for wildflowers. Among these is the devil’s-bit scabious, standing tall at 75 cm, with rounded, blue to pinkish-purple flower heads that attract a wide variety of pollinators, including the rare marsh fritillary butterfly.

Another summer favourite is ragged-robin, whose delicate, frayed pink petals give it a charming, dishevelled look—loved by both bumblebees and honeybees. Meanwhile, the common knapweed, with its thistle-like purple blooms up to one metre tall, draws in butterflies such as the common blue, marbled white, and meadow brown. Look out, too, for the meadow buttercup, a stately plant with glossy yellow flowers that scatter across the meadows like golden stars. Follow the orange walking route, which winds its way through the reserve’s wildflower meadows. In summer, this trail is a sensory delight, buzzing with bees, fluttering with butterflies, and bursting with colour.
