The trend of wild swimming seems here to stay. Especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, more and more people are taking to the water and feeling the health benefits of cold-water swimming.

Swimmers rave about the euphoric feeling they get during and after the swim, as well as the boost for mental well-being.

Whether you’re already a convert or you would like to give it a go, there’s some great options in and around Swanage.

Dancing Ledge saltwater pool

Located on the coast at Langton Matravers near Swanage, this salt water pool was originally blasted out of the rock sometime near the beginning of the 20th century and was used by local prep schools.

This popular beauty spot is also a favourite haunt of climbing enthusiasts, and local outdoor pursuit instructors regularly bring groups here to climb the cliffs.

There is a small amount of parking about 1.5 miles away at a National Trust car park, and you will need to climb down from the cliffs about 5 metres to get access onto the ledge. The walk back up is also pretty steep, so this is certainly not for the faint hearted, but if you’re seeking some adventure, have some climbing skills and want to swim in a picturesque location, this is the perfect place for you.

The pool is more like a large rockpool than a swimming pool, and occasionally waves will crash over the side of the pool from the adjoining cliff. Please note: there might be marine animals in the pool, including stinging anemones, so please be careful not to hurt yourself or them.

There is no charge for swimming, and also no lifeguards or safety equipment – this is true wild swimming. You’ll need some aqua shoes and it’s best to go at low tide on a dry day.

You can watch a Facebook video to get a feel for the walk from the car park down to the ledge, and read TripAdvisor reviews to gain more insight into what to expect.
