Lyme Regis Discovery Trail - Broad Street

Broad Street is the thriving heart of Lyme Regis, offering an eclectic mix of  charming shops and eateries.

Broad Street is proudly home to many independent shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs, as well as many high street brands to provide you with a wonderful shopping experience.

The Royal Lion Hotel is a former coaching inn, dating to the first decade of the 17th century. It is reputedly haunted, with many people claiming to have seen figures in the corridors.

The Three Cups Hotel has many associations with famous literary visitors. Jane Austen, Alfred Lord Tennyson, G.K. Chesterton and J.R.R. Tolkien stayed there and in 1944, General Eisenhower delivered an important briefing to senior officers before D-Day. The building featured in the film version of The French Lieutenant’s Woman in 1981.

Many of Lyme’s businesses have received awards for their commitments to reduce their impact on the environment, with Green Tourism accreditation and Plastic Free status. Look out for the ReFill logo where your water bottles can be filled with tap water in over 20 local businesses and make use of Boomerang Bags if you forget your own.

For a small town, Lyme Regis boasts a remarkable number of cafés and restaurants offering vegetarian and vegan meal options. Lyme Regis was the first town in Dorset to achieve Plastic Free status and was in the top three Plastic Free Communities in the UK in November 2019.

Pitt House

Pitt House (now Boots) is a significant building in Broad Street. It was originally known as the Great House of Lyme Regis.

This listed building has had many famous visitors including William Pitt and his son William Pitt who was the Prime Minister of George III.

It was also briefly the home of Mary Russell Mitford.
