Arts & Culture in Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis has a wealth of art and cultural activities and attractions on offer. You’ll be spoilt for choice with art galleries, theatre, music and festivals.

The town prides itself on its thriving creative scene, with potters, jewellers and glassmakers working alongside clothing designers, sculptors and artisan food and drink producers.

Explore the Sculpture Trail

The Langmoor and Lister Gardens has been home to the Sculpture Trail since 2015. Perched above the beach with breath-taking views over the bay, the gardens provide a perfect outdoor gallery for a range of contemporary sculptures by local artists.

Each year new artwork is chosen from both established and upcoming local artists, representing various styles, using different materials and techniques.

Literary and art connections

The town’s spectacular scenery has inspired many famous artists and authors to create some of their most renowned works, including J.R.R. Tolkien, Jane Austen, James McNeill Whistler and J.M.W. Turner to name a few.

Lyme resident John Fowles wrote ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ and Jane Austen based part of her novel Persuasion in Lyme Regis after holidaying here. You can discover more about Lyme Regis’ art and literary connections at the museum.

Calendar of Events

Today, the town has a buzzing arts community and regular art exhibitions are held at the Town Mill, museum and local galleries in town.

The Town Mill has two exhibition spaces that offer a programme of contemporary art events, showcasing work from established and upcoming local artists. The events exhibit paintings, photographs, ceramics, crafts and sculpture. The artwork is available to purchase, so treat yourself to a piece of unique artwork, a perfect way to remember your trip.

Exhibitions are also held at the Lyme Regis Museum in their Rotunda Gallery, with local artwork going on display for visitors throughout the year.
