Accessible Lyme Regis
Lyme Regis is a quaint and stylish seaside town situated on the south coast of England in the picturesque county of Dorset. Lyme is a year-round resort and an ideal base to discover the surrounding coast and countryside.
The area around the beaches, Marine Parade and Gun Cliff Walk is the most accessible parts of the town. The main shopping area (Broad Street) is on a hill running down towards the seafront. You can view a map of the town showing the main points of interest as well as car parks and free public toilets.
The Cobb harbour wall is Grade I listed with an uneven surface, so care and caution will need to be taken, particularly for those with limited mobility.
This Access to Lyme Regis Guide is aimed at visitors of all abilities. To make the most of your holiday in Lyme Regis, we strongly advise that you check any information in advance to ensure your specific needs can be met.
Beach Wheelchairs
The town council has two beach wheelchairs so you can access the sandy and pebble beaches, as well as a floating wheelchair so you can enjoy the sea.
The all-terrain wheelchairs can be hired for free by those who have trouble getting onto the beach and into the water.
They can be reserved in advance through the town council office by calling 01297 445175 or emailing enquiries@lymeregistowncouncil.gov.uk. They can also be booked on the day if they are not already booked out.
The collection point is from the Marine Parade Shelters on the seafront, where a member of staff will be available to help. You can view a map showing the collection point and Blue Badge parking on the town council website.
Visit the town council website for beach wheelchair FAQs and pictures of the wheelchairs.
You can complete the booking form and read the terms and conditions of hire via the town council website.
Step-free route to seafront
Signs indicate the step-free route from the top of the town (Langmoor Garden gates) to the seafront, and the reverse route. This will help wheelchair users, parents with buggies, and walkers who find using steps is not comfortable.
The route is about 550 metres long but has the benefit of fabulous views. Please be aware this is not a flat route as the gardens slope down towards the sea.
