Sports and Activities in Swanage

Let Swanage’s fresh sea air energise and invigorate you into taking part in an activity during your visit.

Whether it’s on land or water, we’re sure you’ll have a great time creating memories which will last a lifetime.

Tennis, basketball, putting and outdoor bowls

The Beach Gardens Sports Park is the place to be for outdoor tennis and bowls and there’s also an 18-hole putting green too. The basketball court and tennis table is free to use.

Open from April to end of September, you can hire equipment if you haven’t brought your own and even get refreshments and ice-cream from the café – Tea On The Green.

Walking

Swanage is a brilliant location to base yourself if you’re keen on walking.

The South West Coast Path is a fantastic signposted trail connecting with neighbouring villages and popular landmarks such as Old Harry Rocks and Anvil Point Lighthouse.

There’s plenty of walking routes heading inland to discover more of the surrounding countryside and many of them link with buses and trains so you can walk one-way and return using public transport.

Coasteering, kayaking and watersports

It wouldn’t be a day at the seaside without getting out on the ocean waves.

From kayaking and sea fishing to diving, sailing and coasteering, there’s lots of choice for all ages and fitness levels.

You can even hire a pedalo from the beach if you’re seeking something a little less energetic.

Adventure activities and outdoor pursuits

Swanage has many experienced outdoor pursuit instructors to guide you in bushcraft skills, foraging and wild cooking, as well as climbing and abseiling for those of you with a head for heights.

You’ll set out for a day of adventure around the local coast and countryside and return home, full of stories to share with family and friends.

Burlington Health Spa and Fitness Club

For those of you seeking some relaxation time, head over to the Grand Hotel.

Daily, weekly and longer memberships are available at the Burlington Health Spa and Fitness Club to use their heated indoor plunge pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym. And the good news is that if you’re staying at the hotel, you can use it all free of charge.

They also offer a range of treatments as well for a total pamper package.

Golf

The Isle of Purbeck Golf Club is located just 2 miles from Swanage and has fantastic views across Poole Harbour.

There are 2 courses to choose from. The Dene Course is a 9-hole course ideal for golfers of all abilities. There’s also an 18-hole course for more experienced golfers.

Pop over to the clubhouse for a drink or some lunch afterwards and sit back to enjoy the beautiful views.
