Sherborne has had a long association with the creative arts – poets and writers have been frequenting the town since the 18th century but actors and more particularly, film actors, have also been connected to the town.
The town has two very popular festivals in the Autumn that celebrate Sherborne’s links with the two genres – the Sherborne International Film Festival and the Sherborne Literary Festival.
So whether you’re a book worm or a film buff, you’ll find a visit to Sherborne in October entertaining, informing and perhaps even astonishing!
Enjoy world-class performances by international music stars
Sherborne is lucky enough to benefit from its own music festival in May, set against the magical and mesmerising backdrop of Sherborne Abbey.
You could be one of thousands of visitors each year who come to be entertained by Renaissance music to classical performances, lively jazz events and exceptional young local talent.
Add in improvisation workshops, poetry and close harmonies to salon baroque, madrigals and classical ukulele, the Festival delivers a varied programme which truly offers something for everyone.
Events at Sherborne Castle
The Sherborne Castle Country Fair presents a rich and fun programme of events, country activities, stands and entertainment including one of the largest Rare Breed Shows in the country.
In July, watch the Knights of Royal England present the popular jousting tournament which re-creates a late 13th century joust. Gasp in awe at the spectacle of the wonderful horses striking out at full gallop; the excitement and the drama; the pomp and pageantry.
And in the Autumn, the Autumnal Colours event shows off the Capability Brown landscape Gardens in all their glory, rounded off with a bang at the spectacular Fireworks Extravaganza.
