Mudeford Sandbank is a unique spit which adjoins the ancient headland of Hengistbury Head and forms a natural barrier between the harbour and the open sea. The area is designated a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) making it internationally important to environmentalists and can only be reached by foot, bicycle or landtrain from Hengistbury Head or by ferry from Mudeford and Christchurch Quays. The Sandbank has toilets, limited wheelchair access, a shop and a restaurant which is also open during the evening.
