Dorchester is Dorset’s historic county town. Steeped in history, this idyllic market town is a great day out for family fun and culture in picturesque surroundings.
Literature fans may know Dorchester best as Thomas Hardy’s ‘Casterbridge’. Dorchester’s beautiful countryside was the inspiration for much of his work, and you can find out more about his life and work by visiting his home or the County Museum, boasting the largest collection of Hardy artifacts worldwide.
If you’re visiting as a family then there’s 7 museums you might like to visit. We recommend the Dorchester Dinosaur Museum where, with the help of life-size working models, dinosaurs come to life only 7 miles from the Jurassic Coast. Though Dorchester might not bring Egypt immediately to mind, it’s also home to the World Heritage Tutankhamun Exhibition, bringing Tutankhamun’s Tomb to life through sight, sound and smell!
For fine food, plan your trip to Dorchester in time for the French Market held every August. Here you’ll find delicious French breads, cheeses, chocolate, crepes and much more to whet your appetite!
