Combining tranquillity and escapism with a dash of home comfort, glamping can be a hassle-free alternative to camping, or a truly luxurious retreat.

We’ve picked five of our favourite Dorset glamping sites, including adult-only escapes, family-friendly canvas lodges, and secluded sites for group get-togethers.

Loose Reins, Shillingstone

Loose Reins in Dorset

Set amongst the lush rolling countryside of North Dorset’s stunning Blackmore Vale, Loose Reins offers a truly luxurious glamping experience with the emphasis on relaxing and reconnecting with nature. As the name implies, Loose Reins was designed with a nod towards a pioneer ranch and offers accommodation in large canvas lodges (sleeping six) and unique cedar cabins (sleeping four) spaced out around a large paddock, all with stunning views over the Blackmore Vale and the ramparts of the ancient hill fort at Hambledon Hill.

Loose Reins is a fantastic choice for families and is also dog and horse friendly; there’s a paddock to exercise your canine friends and the equine facilities for DIY holiday livery are outstanding. There are miles of trails accessible from the site including the Wessex Ridgeway and North Dorset trailway, plus ancient settlements and picturesque towns and villages within easy reach.

Woodyhide Campsite, Corfe Castle

Woodyhyde Glamping

A 15-acre campsite located in the stunning Purbeck countryside that is within walking distance of the iconic Corfe Castle. The site has recently added affordable glamping accommodation in the form of five yurts (furnished with beds and linens) and a Shepherd’s hut that boasts a double bed, kitchenette and toilet.

The site is well positioned to explore Dorset and the Jurassic Coast, with the wonderful sandy beaches at Studland and Swanage close by along with popular attractions such as the Blue Pool and Dorset Adventure Park. Much to the delight of guests, the Swanage Railway runs adjacent to part of the site so you can get a wonderful view of the stream trains trundling by.

East Shilvinghampton, Portesham

East Shilvinghampton

Just a 10 minute from the dramatic Chesil Beach and only 15 minutes from the golden sand at Weymouth Beach, East Shilvinghampton is a working farm that offers panoramic views across the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

East Shilvinghampton’s luxury camping tents are close to the farmyard. There are cows, goats, pigs, hens and ducks just a toddle away, plus some friendly new Alpacas that have recently joined the farm.

The farm larder will sustain the whole family, being well stocked with lots of local produce and the farm’s own beef and pork, plus a wide range of tantalising home-cooked goodies available to order. The outdoor covered eating area can be found next to the communal pizza oven, making East Shilvinghampton an ideal destination for group holidays.

Stock Gaylard, Sturminster Newton

Luxury yurts at Stock Gaylard

Set on a large country estate deep in rural Dorset, the team at Stock Gaylard have created a number of exclusive sites catering for various sizes of groups. There is a strong conservation and preservation ethos here: all of the accommodation has been built on site and each site is well spaced out to ensure privacy for everyone to enjoy the stunning surroundings. The sites are truly off-grid: there’s no Wi-Fi (although the mobile signal is good) and solar power is used to fuel essential appliances such as lights and fridges.

Couples can enjoy the cosy Sawpits wagon, and there are three further sites featuring custom yurts and even a converted double decker bus! Well behaved dogs are welcome at Stock Gaylard too.

Crafty Camping, Holditch

A luxurious adults-only glamping site lying in 10 acres ancient woodland in West Dorset, where guests can relax in comfort whilst being surrounded by the a truly magical natural environment.

The site established wide acclaim for the Woodsman’s Treehouse, which was awarded ‘House of the Year’ on Channel 4's Grand Designs. It really is a stunning piece of design and engineering that combines craft, luxury and playfulness that will delight everyone that is lucky enough to stay here. Highlights include its own sauna and hot tub on the upper deck, a revolving wood burner, an open air tree-shower and a stainless steel slide.

The woodland site also offers two stunning yurts plus a tipi, bell tent and shepherd’s hut, all complete with king-sized beds, hot water tree-showers and many luxurious and handcrafted touches.

These are just a few of our favourite glamping sites in Dorset, and there are many more to choose from across our glorious county. In addition to dedicated glamping sites, many holiday parks, country cottages and farmstays have added a glamping accommodation option, including pre-pitched bell tents, glamping 'pods', shepherd's huts and cabins.
