Summer has arrived, the evenings are long and we have shed our winter layers. Time to enjoy everything that beautiful Dorset has to offer.

Outdoor theatre in a beautiful setting

In what is now an annual fixture of the summer calendar, Dorchester Arts are presenting a series of outdoor theatre performances in the beautiful and historic setting of Maumbury Rings, Dorchester. It’s the perfect opportunity to grab a picnic and a comfy outdoor chair and bring family and friends to enjoy these wonderful summer evenings in style.

This year, the offering covers everything from Chekhov’s glorious The Cherry Orchard, through one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies re-set against the backdrop of the end of The Great War to an interactive family adventure involving puppets, songs and outdoor surprises.

Miracle Theatre

Miracle Theatre - The Cherry Orchard

This July, the ever-popular Miracle Theatre unpacks Chekhov’s bittersweet comedy about a once-wealthy family, whose idleness and extravagance have brought them to the brink of bankruptcy.  Over nearly 40 years of touring, Miracle theatre have developed a superb reputation for producing entertaining and dynamic adaptations of classic plays.

Much Ado About Nothing

August sees two perfomances, the first being Rain or Shine  Theatre’s interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies, Much Ado About Nothing. Set against the backdrop of November 1918, the end of The Great War, Don Pedro and his comrades are coming at last to Messina (a little known village on the edge of the Cotswolds) where they are met by friends, old and new.

Entertainment for all the family

Rustle

Paddleboat Theatre provide the grand finale to the season, with an afternoon show for younger audiences, Rustle.  The audience is invited to help set up camp so that they can tell the greatest campfire story ever told.  Sleeping bags evolve into monsters, rucksacks become friends and torches highlight the forest’s closest secrets in this entertaining show for all the family.

Naturally, all fingers and toes are crossed for sun but we know these popular annual events are well worth seeing whatever the weather...
