In Days Out

Looking for that special day out whilst visiting Dorset? Then why not add a day trip to Guernsey with Condor Ferries and visit the island that inspired the book and film, “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” to your trip to Dorset!  With the release of the Hollywood Blockbuster, now is the perfect time to explore this beautiful Island!

Sail high speed on the Condor Liberation from Poole to Guernsey

You can sail high speed and get there in 3 hours from Poole, whereby you can sit back and enjoy the scenery of Poole Harbour and the British Isles. Whilst onboard, there are a selection of bars and cafés serving up a selection of tasty refreshments and snacks to start your trip! In addition, the duty-free shop sells perfumes, champagne and beauty products (to name but a few), of up to 40% high street prices.

Ashore, you’ll have 4 hours to explore the wonders and delights of Guernsey. Here are Condor Ferries’ three tops things to try out whilst in on the Island, inspired by the film:

St Peter Port

The book references St Peter Port and life during and post the Occupation. Today, you’ll find evidence of Guernsey’s colourful history, and the residents’ resilience in the face of invasions over hundreds of years. Just a short walk from the town and for those interested in Guernsey's German Occupation years, La Valette Underground Military Museum offers exhibits, collections and information on this era.

Tasty Walks

If you fancy exploring two of Guernsey’s best features - stunning scenery and fabulous food - then Tasty Walks will hit the spot. These 1.5-hour self-guided tours are perfect for exploring the island and to coincide with the film, two new walks have been created:

-Walk in Juliet Ashton’s footsteps (the main character) and explore locations mentioned in the book including the Crown Hotel (now the Ship and Crown) and harbour. It was bombed on 28th June 1940, two days before the start of the German Occupation, killing 34 people and injuring almost 70. Half the Island’s population was also evacuated from here in the days before the start of the occupation.

-The leafy lanes of the parish of St Martin’s are where several of the characters lived. These routes offer stunning views, with paths dotted with remnants of the German Occupation.

Culinary delights

Guernsey is full of culinary delights with stylish restaurants serving the freshest seafood foraged ingredients and locally made gins, alongside traditional cream teas and fish and chips. However, as in the film, a secret stash of moonshine gin kept the members of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society going in the grim years of shortages under Occupation. Check out the Crown Club bar in the Old Government Hotel in St Peter Port and sit back with a Guernsey gin and tonic overlooking views of the harbour.
