In August a remarkable boat will visit Weymouth. The boat, crafted by a fearlessly adventurous team of professional boat builders and volunteers is a living archive of people's stories and lives, a 30ft seafaring vessel made from donated wooden items.
Since early 2011 the public have been donating their wood to the project but not just any old wood. Pencil or piano – exotic as Zebrawood or as familiar as pine every piece has a story behind it.
Donations arrived in their thousands, from highly personal mementoes and family heirlooms to pieces of national importance, including from HMS Victory, the Cutty Sark, and the Mary Rose. All of these donations are now being used to build a state-of-the-art open sports boat.
Following its maiden voyage along the south coast, the boat will be exhibited in Weymouth.
The Boat Project is part of Artists Taking the Lead, a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The Boat Project is the winning commission for the South East region and is funded by Arts Council England
