The bus will drop you just outside The Heights. From hear, walk past the water storage tower and turn left behind the hotel. At the junction turn left behind the hotel. At the junction, turn right and walk along the viewing area of Newground. Take care at the end of this road, as there is not footpath. At the tight bend walk straight across heading towards the Verne prison.
Follow the road around and head towards the gate. On your right hand side are High Angle Batteries. Go around the gate and follow the main footpath heading towards the viewing are. From hear you can enjoy views od the Dorset coastline and also Portland Harbour and Breakwaters.
From hear re-join the path and continue through the gap in the wall, along the road past the Young Offenders Institute. Follow the footpath on the left hand side, passing the car park coastguard cottages and the blowing green on your right. As the path widens keep to the left above East Weares. Near the end of this footpath round to the right, this will take you to the viewing area by ruins of Rufus Castle, above Church Ope cove.
The footpath then carries on under the archway. If you need any refreshment at this point, the Mermaid Inn just to your right. Turn left hear and follow the pavement along past Pennsylvania Castle and Cove Holiday Park. Just after Cove Holiday Park you will need to cross onto the other pavement. Carry on past the Cheyne viewing point and just past this there is a footpath on your left. Follow this footpath, through the old quarries to Portland Bill.
Head towards the main lighthouse at the tip of the Bill. From hear head up the hill, past the Pulpit Inn towards the Old Higher Lighthouse and Coastwatch tower.
Follow the coast path for about 3.5 miles, past Southwell Business Park and Blacknor Fort. After Blacknor Fort, you may notice that the footpath is following the route of an old railway. The railway would have been used by the quarries, to transport store to the boats at Castletown.
Near the end of this path, you will see several turnings on your right. If you want to take a slight detour, these footpaths will lead you into the Tour Quarry Sculpture Park. This is a disused quarry with sculptures dotted all around. In the summer you may even see sculptors at work.
Back on the main coast path, you will soon arrive at the main road by a replica crane. Follow the road back up the hill to Dowsett Motors. The bus stop for busses back to Weymouth is adjacent to the garage opposite The Heights.
