There aren't many areas that can claim a huge naked chalk giant, a coastline where you can follow in the footsteps of dinosaurs and the largest hillfort in Europe - but with the vast scope of Dorset's heritage you will discover these and much much more!

Dorset has 200 million years of history to uncover and you will find reminders of its rich heritage wherever you go.

The dramatic Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, is world famous for its fossils. Chesil Beach, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are among the 'must see' locations along this spectacular 95 mile stretch of coastline.

The Dorset landscape has long been the inspiration for many authors and poets and more recently for TV and film producers. Above all, this is Thomas Hardy country - ancient Wessex, home of the Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D'urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. You will find many other famous literary associations across the area including Jane Austen, John Fowles, TE Lawrence and Enid Blyton.

There are some outstanding places to visit in Dorset where you can soak up the atmosphere of bygone eras. Major ancient and historic sites include the impressive Maiden Castle hillfort, Pilsdon Pen, Eggardon Hill and Hambledon and Hodd Hills - the views alone are worth the steep climb! A steam train ride with Swanage Railway gives you unique views of Corfe Castle's imposing ruins.
