Wyke Regis

Wyke Regis takes its name from the old word 'wic' or even 'ic' and there are various opinions as to its meaning - it may be 'dairy farm', dependent farm (of Portland?) or harbour/fishery. The 'Regis' indicates royal ownership dating back to the 13th century, when the village is named as 'Kingeswic' in some documents. Wyke's Charter of 988 is the earliest one in existence locally and describes the boundaries of Wyke, although these are difficult to identify today. Worth a visit is Sandsfoot Castle and gardens, a newly restored Tudor castle overlooking Portland harbour. Wyke is also home to the famous Crab House Cafe at Ferrybridge. Kite and windsurfing availble at Windtek and diving at Fathom and Blues.
