Sutton Poyntz

The first part of the name is derived from the Old English words 'sud' (south) and tun (farm). The manor here was held by the Poyntz family from the 13th century. On 18th April 1908 a serious fire broke out in the village and by the time the Weymouth Fire Brigade arrived, almost a quarter of a mile of buildings was on fire. It was contained to one side of the street, but several buildings, including the Court House were completely gutted. Work on restoration of the village began in 1962 and today Sutton Poyntz is picture- postcard-pretty with a village pub over looking the duckpond. Special arrangements can be made to visit the Water Museum. Several self catering cottages & B&B's are available.
