Beaminster is a prosperous market town with over 200 listed buildings and is a designated important conservation area. The town is a charming place to shop, browse and sample local fare and even embark on some beautiful walks for Beaminster stands at the head of the River Brit’s ‘Hidden Valley’, renowned for its tranquillity, wildlife and old water mills. It has recently gained fame for the carefully chosen location of MasterChef 2009 winner Matt Follas’ restaurant ‘The Wild Garlic’. The town, which was once thrice devastated by fire was much loved by Hardy, describing it as “the hill-surrounded little town” with “the Tudor church-tower of red stone” in 'Tess of the D’Urbervilles'.
